All You Need to Know About Tungsten
Tungsten is a kind of refractory metal with one of the highest melting points. And it is known for its toughness and high hardness. The metal is super dense with a density similar to gold. It has a low coefficient of thermal expansion and is stable in dimensions.
With these unique features, tungsten can be used in various applications like semiconductors, high-temperature furnaces, lamps, and medical industries.
We have many years of production experience in transferring tungsten powder into finished parts by metallurgy.
In all processes, we pay much attention to details and devote ourselves to the highest accuracy and bring our customers uncompromising quality and constant stability.
In the passages below, we will introduce tungsten properties, applications, production process, product classification, and points to consider when purchasing.

Tungsten
Advantages
With unique features, tungsten is widely used in wide industries. Here we would like to list several.

Tungsten Product Range
Tungsten Production Process
Production process: weight powder, powder press, sintering, machining, and inspection.
1. Tungsten powder
Our tungsten powder is sourced from selected trustworthy tungsten powder suppliers. Refining tungsten from ore is by a series of chemical reactions. Tungsten ores, typically in oxides form, are digested in base to give solutions of tungstate together with many contaminating species. This crude extract is acidified and treated with sulfide to separate molybdenum trisulfide. Upon further acidification, APT eventually crystallizes. Our tungsten powder is refined from first-class and highest-purity APT.

2. Pressing
Tungsten powder comes with an inspection sheet. Our inspector checks its purity and grain size. In order to ensure the quality, we take a random check for sample powder to check whether there is foreign material. After that, the tungsten powder is sifted and mixed with a binder. Based on finished parts, a certain weight of tungsten powder is loaded into a steel mold. The mold can be big or small which is decided by the size of the part. Normally if the size is big, we put tungsten powder in a mold into a CIP. If it is small, we use an automatic pressing machine to press it. After pressing, tungsten powder forms a compact shape but is still fragile. It needs attention.

3. Sintering
The pressed billet is put into a boat which can be refractory metals or graphite and then loaded into a furnace with a hydrogen atmosphere. The high temperature in the furnace can make the material more compact and increase density. The accuracy and time of temperature are very important. They have much influence on the properties of tungsten. Unloaded from furnaces, the pressed billet becomes a sintered billet with a shining grey-silver color.

4. Swaging
For rods or parts made from rods, if there are no high-density and dense structure requirements, sintered tungsten can be directly used for machining parts. But if there are property requirements, we add one more process to improve its properties. In swager, a tungsten rod goes through a die, in which it is hammered about 10,000 blows per minute. When the rod comes out, its diameter is reduced by 12% per pass and the rod can have better ductility and strength.

5. Rolling
Rolling is a process for tungsten sheets. Rolling has three types which are classified by temperature. There are hot rolling, warm rolling, and cold rolling. By rolling the tungsten billets, billets can be rolled into tungsten foils, tungsten sheets, and tungsten plates. Before using a roller, we have to check the density of the billets. If the relative density is above 90%, the billet can be processed. A well-maintained roller is also very important for a homogeneous inner structure and good surface.

6. Drawing
If we need to turn the tungsten rod into a tungsten wire, a drawing machine is a must. By putting about 3mm diameter tungsten rod into the drawing machine, the process begins. The drawing machine has different molds with different diameters. Through the drawing machine, the wire can be customized.

Tips For Tungsten Machining
Tungsten is of high hardness and strength.
Crystal grains of tungsten are much harder than that of molybdenum, so milling can wear the cutting edge quickly. The temperature and duration time has a great influence on tungsten grain sizes. Grain size furtherly affects machinability. When the grain size is big and recrystallized, its machinability decreases, and chips happen more often.
When the tungsten material is cut, it is easy to produce lumps and the machined surface is rough. To machine tungsten smoothly, you need the right cutting tool. After trialing for different materials like diamond, CBN, and ceramics, we find Cemented carbide is the ideal cutting material. Tungsten carbide has different grades. And each grade has corresponding hardness and toughness. Tungsten carbide with high hardness and toughness can work well.

When cutting tungsten ingots or tungsten rods with cemented carbide, the main declination angle of 45° can be selected. The rake angle and rear angle should be smaller during rough turning, and the rake angle and rear angle should be appropriately increased during rough turning and semi-finishing. Pure tungsten is extremely brittle, and it is easy to chip or peel off during cutting. When the tool cuts in and out, the feed rate should be reduced to prevent tool damage.
We can also use wire EDM to cut tungsten material. It can achieve various grades by the speed of wire cutting.
