All You Need to Know About Copper Tungsten
Copper tungsten (tungsten copper, CuW, or WCu) is a metal alloy with tungsten and copper. Both elements are not mutually soluble. The structure it forms is a metal matrix composite.
Copper tungsten is a perfect choice where high thermal conductivity or low thermal expansion is important.
With these unique features, copper tungsten can be used in various applications like electrodes in resistance welding, electrodes in EDM machining, switch contacts in electricity, heat sinks in semiconductors.
We have many years of production experience in turning powder into finished parts by metallurgy.
In all processes, we pay much attention to details and devote ourselves to the highest accuracy and bring our customers uncompromising quality and constant stability.
In the passages below, we will introduce copper tungsten properties, applications, production process, product classification, and points to consider when purchasing.

Copper Tungsten
Advantages
With unique features, copper tungsten is widely used in wide industries. Here we would like to list several properties.
Copper Tungsten Applications
Copper tungsten is used for electrical discharge machining (EDM).
With copper’s high electrical conductivity and tungsten’s wear resistance, copper tungsten is one of the most suitable materials for EDM and ECM.
Copper tungsten can be used as electrodes for resistance welding.
Combining the good thermal conductivity of copper with the high hardness and wear resistance of tungsten, copper tungsten (Elkonite) is chosen as the welding electrode. Inserted welding electrodes or facing of electrodes.
Copper tungsten is used as arc contacts and vacuum contacts in high/medium voltage breakers or vacuum interrupters.
We produce copper tungsten materials with excellent high-temperature stability and high electrical and thermal conductivity. Choose our copper tungsten arc erosion contacts in gas-insulated and air-insulated switchgear as well as high- and medium-voltage generator circuit breakers.
Copper tungsten is applied in the micro semiconductor industry.
With high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion, the common usage is as heat sinks, heat spreaders, spacers, tabs, shims, mounts, and pedestals in areas like High Power Semiconductor Lasers, Optical Benches, HB LEDs, fiber lasers, RF and MW amplifiers.
Copper Tungsten Production Process
Production process: weighing powder, mixing powder, press powder, sintering, infiltration, machining, and inspection.
From accurately weighing raw materials and applying exacting temperatures at different stages, to precise machining and extensive quality control systems, attention to detail is key to ensuring finished copper tungsten parts meet the standards required by our customers.

Tips For Copper Tungsten Machining
For the same composition, it is normal to see different appearances of copper tungsten after milling, lathe processing, and grinding.
It is normal for tungsten copper rods to have a steel (black) color after being finely ground by a coreless grinder.
After being semi-finely (coarsely) ground, it shows a copper (red) color.
Tungsten copper is easy to be processed and shape, and it can be processed by ordinary milling machines, lathes, grinders, and wire-cutting machines. The metal may be chipped due to impact or excessive processing load when making a thin wall with a sharp angle. When drilling through holes in tungsten copper, please pay attention to the feeding force when the hole is about to be drilled through to avoid chipping. With non-magnetic properties, it is important to make sure that the part is firmly fixed before working.
Tungsten copper contains most of the tungsten, which is hard and brittle, resulting in good bending strength and hardness, but the flexibility and elongation are low, so it is not suitable for bending and drawing at large angles.
