All You Need to Know About Tungsten Heavy Alloys

Tungsten heavy alloy is produced to be a choice of pure tungsten. Pure tungsten has high hardness and is difficult to machine. Tungsten heavy alloy is different. It still maintains the advantages of pure tungsten like high density and radiation shielding but also has the edge to be more machinable and less expensive.
We have been producing tungsten heavy alloys from powder to billets and billets to finished parts with high accuracy.

It is a pseudo-alloy of tungsten with a nickel-iron or nickel-copper. With iron, the metal can be magnetic. Tungsten heavy alloy has four grades: Class 1, 2, 3, and 4. We produce all of these grades conforming to ASTM B777 or other standards. The alloy can be manufactured into different forms like sheets, plates, blocks, rods, cubes, rings, or other required parts.

We have many years of production experience in turning powder into finished parts by metallurgy.

In all processes, we pay much attention to details and devote ourselves to the highest accuracy and bring our customers uncompromising quality and constant stability.

In the passages below, we will introduce the properties, applications, production process, product classification, and points to consider when purchasing.

Tungsten Heavy Alloy Production Process

From powder to finished parts, every step we care.

Production process: weighing powder, mixing powder, pressing powder, sintering, machining, and inspection.
From accurately weighing raw materials and applying exacting temperatures at different stages, to precise machining and extensive quality control systems, attention to detail is key to ensuring finished tungsten heavy alloy parts meet the standards required by our customers.

1. Material Preparation

Our tungsten powder, nickel powder, iron powder, copper powder are sourced from selected trustworthy suppliers. In incoming inspection, all powders are with certificates. Our inspectors double check its purity, particle size and distribution, apparent density, and flow characteristics. Then we need to blend these powders together along with additives based on process form.

2. Pressing

Based on finished parts, a certain weight of the pre-mixed powder is loaded into a die cavity. The mold can be big or small which is decided by the size of the part. Normally if the size is big, we put the powder in a mold into a CIP. If it is small, we use an automatic pressing machine to press it. After pressing, the alloy powder forms a compact shape but is still fragile. It needs attention when handling.

3. Sintering

For small parts, we will sinter in muffle furnaces. If large parts, we have sintering furnaces. In the sintering, tungsten alloy powder billets become a dense and compacted part. Furnace temperature and time are very important for the quality of the parts.

4. Machining

For products with not-so-high accuracy dimension requirements, we can achieve this by sintering in the designed mold along with rough machining.

But if there is a complex and sophisticated shape, we have a full line of CNC and conventional machining equipment to reach the most demanding designs through the most efficient production ways possible.

5. Inspection and Package

For finished parts, we do random check about the surfaces, dimensions, and other requirements based on process form.

If there is defective part found, we will increase the inspection rate.

After checking, we pack the parts and make sure their package is firm.
